National Night Out
The largest National Night Out in the Houston area returns on Tuesday, October 1st! Check it out at 5620 W Tidwell - the YES Prep White Oak campus - from 5:30 - 8:00 pm.
This is a community-wide event for residents, employees and businesses in the Near Northwest District. Meet your community neighbors and learn more about neighborhood businesses and services while the kids have fun.
Amusements include a petting zoo, two bounce houses, a rock climbing wall and gyro. Amusements are sponsored by Diamond Ridge Apartments, HollyView Apartments, Los Piños Verdes Apartments, Rancho Verde Apartments, and The Reserve at White Oak. And check out the obstacle course as well! Exhibitors include Target, Walgreens, Bimbo Bakeries, Chase Bank, Chick-fil-A, Claude's Pharmacy, Domino's, Greater Inwood Partnership, 89.3 KSBJ Radio, Liberty Tax Service, Scott Baxter State Farm Insurance, Shipley Donuts and others. Participating law enforcement and public safety agencies include Harris County Constables Precinct 1, Harris County Sheriff's Office, Houston Fire Department, Houston Police Department, and US Department of Justice - DEA.

RaceWay and RaceTrac were recognized by the Near Northwest Management District as a "Change Champion" for their location at 6737 W Tidwell at Bingle Road. The store recently extended its operations to 24 hours a day and now offers fresh hot pizza. "We are so pleased to have this new development by RaceWay," declared District President Wayne Norden. Save the Date - Spring Plant Sale - April 5, 2014
Calling all plant lovers and gardeners! The Spring Plant Sale benefitting the White Oak Butterfly and Hummingbird Garden is scheduled for Saturday, April 5, 2014 at the White Oak Conference Center, 7603 Antoine Drive.
Heidi Sheesley will again share her plant knowledge and experience at 9:00 am, and the sale will run from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm. The sale includes a number of native and adapted plants, including many of the plants featured in our Garden.
White Oak Butterfly and Hummingbird Garden
Thanks to Kathy Huber for her great article about the Garden in the Houston Chronicle (September 7, 2013)! The Garden is a component of the revitalization plans for the area, and has become a meeting spot for the community.
Buchanan's Native Plants sponsored a Garden tour on Wednesday, September 25th. This was the first official Garden Tour, and more than 70 gardeners of all ages took the tour, led by NNMD Director Heidi Sheesley, owner of Treesearch Farms.
Our wild butterflies were out in full force, along with bees and hummingbirds, and the weather was picture perfect.

Spring Plant Sale
The Spring Plant Sale is back! This is your chance to add perennial plants to your business' landscaping or your yard to attract and nourish butterflies and hummingbirds. Heidi Sheesley, owner of Treesearch Farms and a District Board member, is a renowned horticulturist with an extensive knowledge of native and adapted plants. Heidi will speak about using native and adapted plants and give planting tips. Her presentation will be illustrated with her photographs.

Houston Livestock Show and RodeoT events are kicking off! Trail rides are converging on Memorial Park on Friday, Feb. 22 in preparation for the Downtown Rodeo Parade on Saturday. Three groups will ride through the District - the Prairie View, Sam Houston and Texas Cattlemen's Trail Rides.
Watch for riders and wagons in the area!
The Prairie View Trail Ride will ride in on Fallbrook from FM 1960 and camp at the Sam Houston Race Park on Thursday, 2/21. On Friday morning, they will ride east on Breen to N Houston Rosslyn and turn onto Alabonson Rd. After their break around 10 am at Antoine and W Little York, they'll ride south on Antoine Dr to their lunch stop at Northwest Mall.
The Sam Houston Trail Ride will also camp at the Sam Houston Race Park Thursday. On Friday they will ride east on Breen Rd and then south on N Houston Rosslyn, taking a mid-morning break near W Little York. They will then ride south on N Houston Rosslyn and Antoine to Mangum
Texas Cattlemen's Trail Drive will camp in the 11100 block of N Houston Rosslyn on Thursday. On Friday, they will ride south on N Houston Rosslyn Rd, taking a break near W Little York, and then continue south on N Houston Rosslyn and Antoine Dr.
Friday is Go Texan Day, so polish up those boots, starch your jeans and cowboy or cowgirl up!

Butterfly and Hummingbird Garden
The Garden draws visitors on a daily basis to watch the wild butterflies, to take a quiet walk, and to check out our plant selections. Come by and visit - 7603 Antoine Drive
Thanks to everyone who brought bags of fallen leaves and pine needles to the White Oak Conference Center. Volunteers spread the leaves in the butterfly and Hummingbird Garden and around the Inwood Pine to serve as mulch to protect this unique tree, and to prepare the area around the tree for a future garden.
Please continue to bring your leaves to 7603 Antoine Drive, and please encourage your neighbors and friends to bring theirs. Just follow the signs in the parking lot to the bag drop.

METRO Bike and Ride Survey
METRO and the Houston-Galveston Area Council are currently conducting a Bike and Ride Study to improve connections between bicyclists and the transit network in the METRO service area. METRO wants to hear from transit users and bicyclists on your thoughts for improving the system.
